Educational video describing muscle anatomy of the back.
The muscles of the back are arranged into three groups:
1-Superficial: muscles that act on the upper extremity.
2-Intermediate: muscles in the thorax
3-Deep: muscles of the vertebral column.
Superficial
1-Latissimus dorsi: originates from the posterior third of the iliac crest, the sacral crest and the spinous processes of L5-T6.
2-Trapezius: originates from the spinous processes of C7-T12 and inserts into the posterior border of the lateral third of the clavicle, acromion process and spine of scapula.
3-Rhomboideus (minor&major): originates in the spinous processes of C7-T4 and inserts into the medial border of the scapula.
4-Levator scapulae: originates from the transverse process of C1-C$ and inserts into the superior part of the medial border of the scapula.
5-Gluteus maximus: originates from the surface of the ilium as well as the posterior inferior surface of the sacrum and coccyx. It inserts into the gluteal tuberosity of the femur and the iliotibial tract.
Intermediate
1-Serratus posterior superior: originates on the spinous processes of C7-T11 and inserts into the first three ribs.
2-Serratus posterior inferior: originates on the spinous processes of T11-L@ and inserts into inferior border of ribs 9-12.
Deep
1-Erector spinae: muscles extending from the spinous processes to the ribs. These extensor muscles include:
a-spinalis thoracis & lumborum.
b-Iliocostalis lumborum & thoracis
c-Longissimus lumborum & thoracis
2-Spelnius muscles: These extensor muscles include:
a-Splenius capitus
b-Splenius cervicis
3-Semispinalis muscle: These extensor muscles include:
a- Semispinalis capitis
b-Semispinalis cervicis
Suboccipital
1-Rectus capitis posterior minor
2-Rectus capitis posterior major
3-Obliqus capitis superior
4-Obliqus capitis inferior
Small deep muscles
1-Interspinalis
2-Rotatores
3-Multifinidus
4-Intertransversarii laterlais lumborum
