Tensions rose in Majuli of Upper Assam on Friday after several women marched to the local police station and demanded police release their husbands arrested for allegedly participating in child marriage.

"Why was the accused arrested like that?," one of the protesters raged near the Majuli police station. "He had not stolen anything. He submitted documents at the police station yesterday. Why did they arrest him last night after questioning him in the morning? How would Himanta Biswa Sarma feel if his child was arrested like that?," she added.

She she that they have been promised Rs 1,000 under the Arunodoi scheme, but do not want that money. "We have not been sustaining ourselves on that money. We are used to working like slaves. Why is Himanta Biswa Sarma breaking up families living in bliss?." she said.

The Assam Police have arrested over 2,000 people so far on Friday in a massive crackdown on child marriage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The crackdown began early in the morning across the state and it will continue over the next three to four days.
